Corruption suspected at the airport27.05.2014
The management of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH (FBB) has informed the specialist public prosecutor’s office in Neuruppin about a case of suspected corruption on the part of a senior member of staff. The suspicion arose following a conversation with a representative of an international company involved in technical planning. It is alleged that the airport operator’s employee – whose responsibilities included awarding planning contracts for BER – demanded bribes during a contract awarding procedure.
CEO Hartmut Mehdorn issued the following statement: “We did not make the allegation public initially because we did not want to wrongly accuse the employee. We waited to see whether the prosecution service would confirm that there were grounds for initial suspicion. Now that searches have been conducted in connection with this matter, we will take appropriate action against those involved. FBB was not affected by the searches and is fully supporting the public prosecutor’s investigations, which relate to a case of suspected corruption in business dealings.
Based on the information currently available to us, the allegation concerns approximately €0.5 million in bribe money.”
