Expansion of capacity for BER: Green light for further planning19.09.2014
The Supervisory Board of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH today gave the green light to the proposal by the management to explore in greater depth the expansion of air traffic at BER. These studies will focus on the possibilities for further use of Schönefeld Airport and expansion of the BER site as a whole. Simultaneously, Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH will explore, together with representatives of the federal government, interim scenarios setting out how and where the VIP Transport Unit of the German military can be accommodated in the airport area. Airport CEO Hartmut Mehdorn expressed satisfaction with the result: “Today we have taken another important step. We can now further develop our plans for the expansion and, in joint consultation, we will surely find a good solution for the VIP Transport Unit as well.”
This decision has been prompted by the strongly growing passenger volumes at Schönefeld and Tegel airports. For the eleventh year in succession, air traffic in Berlin has been developing better than the average for all German airports. This year FBB expects a total of over 27 million passengers at Tegel and Schönefeld – more than ever before.
Further issues discussed at the meeting of the Supervisory Board included the latest key financial figures and the current status of plans and work at BER.
