"Spende Dein Pfand": New joint project at Tegel Airport

28.06.2017

A little bin can make a big difference. At Tegel Airport, passengers can donate deposit bottles that they no longer need. The first perspex containers, with "Spende Dein Pfand" (Donate your deposit) can now be found in terminals C and D. The joint project of the same name emerges out of cooperation with the airport company and Der Grüne Punkt - from education and employment provider Goldnetz gGmbh, as well as the Berliner Tafel e.V. (the Berlin food bank). It was through this initiative that gainful employment was made possible for ten long-term unemployed persons. These 'deposit representatives', employed by Goldnetz – financed entirely from Job Center and local state funds are now responsible for the transport, setting-up, emptying and cleaning of the bins, as well as the sorting of the deposit packaging. Der Grüne Punkt is taking care of the logistical side; meaning the pick-up, counting, totalling and recycling of bottles that come out of the "Spende Dein Pfand" containers. On top of this, they will also see to the extra sorting of the deposit packaging of liquid waste at the security control areas. All proceeds from the deposited bottles go entirely to the benefit of the Berliner Tafel e.V. In the first two weeks, 3200 euros were already collected. The initiative "Spende Dein Pfand" is meant to be gradually enlarged, with more available bins and employees being called on hand, as well as the introduction of the scheme at Schönefeld Airport.

Dr. Till Bunse, Head of Commercial Operations at Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: "As an airport company, it is important for us to take responsibility for our environment. Many of the deposit bottles that accumulate daily at Tegel Airport can be further recycled thanks to the 'Spende Dein Pfand' initiative. In this way, we are also able to provide disadvantaged persons with a door into the working world and enable new perspectives. "

Michael Wiener, CEO Der Grüne Punkt: "Berlin Tegel Airport is now the seventh aiport in Germany joining the initiative. With over 20 million yearly passengers, it is certainly the biggest for us so far. I am especially pleased that the German capital, with its most important airport, are taking on this project. In the best of ways "Spende Dein Pfand" is a sustainable project. Instead of having cans and bottles land in the trash, we are able to collect and recycle them. The project also creates employment and provides chances for long-term unemployed persons. I am delighted that the significant deposit amounts can benefit the Berlin food bank."

Karin Pfluger, Managing Director of Goldnetz gGmbH: "With the 'Spende Dein Pfand' project, we are combining our social engagement with the integration of long-term unemployed persons into the working world, through publicly supported means. The 'deposit representatives' show personal commitment with the work that they do, and are able to feel appreciation through cooperation with project partners and the high level of acceptance from passengers. The approach to the project, which is grounded in teamwork, is a win-win situation for all involved."

Sabine Werth, Founder and Head of Berliner Tafel e.V.: "'Spende Dein Pfand' stands for our core aims. That is, the careful handling of resources and the support for people in need. With the proceeds, we will be able to finance a new, long over-due refrigeration cell for the food we have. Our heartfelt thanks to all cooperation partners!"

The Project "Spende Dein Pfand"

  • The idea of "Spende Dein Pfand" emerged from the student initiative "enactus" in 2010, from Hohenheim University
  • In 2013, the initiative was started at Stuttgart airport in cooperation with Der Grüne Punkt and other charitable organisations.
  • In 2015, the airports in Cologne/Bonn, Hamburg, and in 2016, Bremen, Dresden and Paderborn/Lippstadt follow suit.
