An airport is an exciting place and a holiday trip is a thrilling time. To ensure that that the family holiday can begin as smoothly as possible from Schönefeld and Tegel, we have compiled five tips for you. Numerous services at the airports alleviate the waiting time until departure for the small passengers.

1. Arrive in peace

Use the online check-in and pick your desired seats in advance. You then only need to drop off your luggage at the airport and go through the security check. We recommend that you arrive at least two hours before your departure time. Bear in mind that some things take a while longer with children and a time cushion can reduce stress. Both airports can be reached comfortably with public transport. Different buses travel to Tegel from the Berlin city centre. You can get to Schönefeld from the city the quickest with the Airport Express (RE 7 and RB 14) or the S-Bahn commuter train (S9 and S45). If you prefer to come with your own car, you can book your parking space at Schönefeld online in advance.

2. Where to go with the buggy?

As soon as you have children, travelling with small trolley cases is over for now. You have much more luggage. For most airlines, the free luggage allowance is 20kg in Economy Class. Prams, pushchairs and child car seats count as oversize luggage and have to be handed over at the oversize luggage counter after check-in (Tegel: Terminal C & E, Schönefeld: Terminal A, B & D). With some airlines, it is possible to bring the pram right up to the plane. In principle, pushchairs up to the following dimensions are allowed to be brought through the security check: 1.50m high x 0.33m wide x 0.38m deep.

3. I’m hungry!

Pack some snacks in your hand baggage. Baby food can also be brought in hand baggage. Otherwise, only liquids up to max. 100 ml in a sealable 1-litre plastic bag can be brought with you. At both airports, you can find various options to eat and drink both in the public area and after the security check. Some restaurants offer children’s meals and play areas. You can stock up on everyday necessities in various shops. At Tegel, there is a pharmacy in case there’s anything missing from the first-aid kit (Terminal A).

4. Waiting & baby-changing

Anyone who is travelling on holiday from Tegel with a baby or a small child can spend the wait in the family room. Unaccompanied children that are looked after by an airline employee can also wait there. The room is located in Terminal A (Level 0) and offers a small play and reading area. Please register at the passenger information point in Terminal A beforehand. If you have to change your child again before departure, you can find baby changing rooms at both airports in every terminal.

5. Play & marvel

Some movement before departure can do no damage. At Tegel, there is a play area after the security check where children can explore the airport world with wall games (Terminal C1). The visitor terraces at both airports surely offer the best experience. From there, you can watch the apron and observe planes from around the world taking off and landing. By the way: Anyone flying with children can bring an extra piece of hand luggage with some airlines. Perhaps your child already has their own small suitcase that they are proud to pull along behind them? It provides space for their favourite stuffed animal, toy, books, colouring book and pens – all sorts of useful things that can help to pass the waiting time.
