One can hardly even imagine that the plot of land between Gutshof and Groß Machnow primary school was barely accessible three weeks ago. But the green thicket was turned into a beautiful farm garden by 14 young people from nine countries, during the 14th International Work Camp in Zülowniederung.

Together with Markus Mohn from the "Landschaftspflegeverein Mittelbrandenburg", the young people led the celebratory final presentation through the newly developed garden. The young people showed neighbours, political representatives, the media and the airport company the freshly laid out paths, shelters for animals, seating for walkers as well as nesting boxes and raised beds, which they had built themselves.

Chief Human Resources Director at FBB, Dr Manfred Bobke-von Camen, thanked the young men and women for their commitment and made clear why this was so important to the airport company: “You have not only made this farm garden usable again for the inhabitants of Rangsdorf and thus also upgraded our airport region, but have also demonstrated ‘Diversity in Action’: your joint project work across borders of countries, cultures, age groups and interests is a living diversity.”

The International Work Camp was first organised in 2005 by the "Landschaftspflegeverein Mittelbrandenburg e.V." and the "Verein Internationale Jugendgemeinschaftsdienste (ijgd)". Since then, 229 young people from 37 nations have already rendered outstanding services to the natural landscape area of Rangsdorf.

In the course of the construction of the capital’s airport BER, the airport company is implementing numerous compensation and replacement measures in the long term with the aim of preserving and improving the natural balance in the habitat around the BER. The most extensive of these projects is the upgrading of the Zülowniederung, an agricultural lowland and cultural landscape between Mittenwalde, Dabendorf and Rangsdorf with a size of about 2,600 hectares.
