Lost your suitcase? Here’s what to do.

20.10.2018

Unfortunately, it happens again and again that checked luggage does not arrive at its destination or that it is damaged. There are many reasons for this and it is annoying at first. But the good news is that most missing suitcases reappear soon afterwards. What you should do if you lose your luggage on board or at the airport is described below:

Lost luggage

If you are waiting in vain for your suitcase at the baggage carousel, you must notify the airline directly that you have lost your baggage as lost or damaged baggage is the responsibility of the respective airline. If your baggage cannot be found on arrival or if you have forgotten something on the plane, please report this immediately to the baggage tracing service responsible. With some airlines, it is also possible to report online that you have lost your luggage. Please keep all your flight documents safe, in particular your boarding pass and the baggage tag.

As a rule, your missing luggage will be delivered to you by courier as soon as possible. If you are not at home, most airlines will refund important items such as toiletries and basic clothing up to a certain value. Please clarify how much you have lost with your airline in advance and keep all receipts of your expenses.

Here you will find the contact person of the airline responsible. Smartphone users can also find the contacts on the Berlin Airport App.

What to do if your checked baggage is damaged

Your suitcase has arrived but is damaged? You should also report this immediately to the airline responsible. The airline is not liable for certain damages. These are, for example, damages caused by rain and snow. The airlines are also not liable, or only to a limited extent, for transporting fragile or very valuable items in luggage. If possible, report the damage to the baggage tracing service responsible immediately after arriving. Please check the airline’s website for more information.

Baggage lost at the airport

In the event that you lose or find anything at the airport, there is a lost property office both at Schönefeld and Tegel. The offices are located in the public area in front of the security checkpoint at Schönefeld in Terminal D Arrivals and at Tegel on the ground floor of the Service Center in Terminal A.
