Travel Preparations for Flying

09.04.2019

The holiday season is the travel season and at Schönefeld and Tegel Airports it will be bustling. With these tips, you can help reduce waiting times at the airport and board your flight stress-free.

The journey begins at home: pack everything right

Before departure, first check with your airline what weight restrictions apply to your luggage. When packing your bags, be sure about what is going into your hold luggage and your hand luggage to avoid any nasty surprises at the security checks.

  • For hold luggage, there are restrictions on things that are allowed in your suitcase. For example, e-cigarettes and power banks are not allowed in the hold but are allowed in hand luggage. Information on hold luggage policies can be found here:

Online Check-in: Save yourself the trip to the check-in counter

Check in online conveniently from home or on the way before departure to avoid longer waiting times at the airport. From when you can check in for your flight is determined individually by the airline – in most cases, checking in is possible at least 24 hours before departure.

Other advantages of online check-in:

  • You have the opportunity to see an overview of the available seats on the plane and choose any seat you like.
  • You can drop-off your hold luggage at the baggage drop-off counter without having to queue at the check-in counter.
  • If you are travelling with hand luggage only, you can go straight to security checks and the gate with your boarding pass and ID card/passport.

You can find more information about online check-in here:

Getting to the airport: Not at the last minute!

Allow plenty of time to travel to the airport – it can get crowded on the roads too. It is normally recommended to arrive at the airport two hours before departure.

If you are flying from Schönefeld and travelling there by car, it is recommended to book a parking space at the airport in advance – this will save you the search for a spot when you get there.

If you are arriving here by public transport, read up about possible cancellations or disruptions ahead of time.

At the airport – quickly from A to B

For short and direct journeys at the airport, you can find out in advance where to find what and how to get where. You can find the site maps for Schönefeld and Tegel here:

At Tegel airport, you can also find your bearings with the help of indoor navigation, which is available on the Berlin Airport App. The app also offers many helpful tips and services for both Berlin airports. It is available for free for iOS and Android devices.

We hope you have a relaxing start to your holiday!
