Located midway between New York and Washington DC, Philadelphia is a great alternative to the popular Big Apple. "Philly", as its inhabitants affectionately call it, is considered the birthplace of the United States. This city located on the Delaware River is a must to visit, and not just because of its historical attractions. Here are some of the many reasons why:Of course in Philadelphia you can't help but get a taste of the founding history of America. The "Old City" is the historical heart of Philadelphia. Here you’ll find the Liberty Bell, which was rung when the United States Declaration of Independence was proclaimed in 1776. The bell is struck on July 4 every year by descendants of the founding fathers to celebrate Independence Day. The nearby National Constitution Center and the Independence Hall, where the constitution was passed in 1787, are also essential items on any tourist’s agenda. The Elfreth's Alley, the city's oldest street, is also well worth a visit. As you stroll through the cobblestone streets past the pretty and lovingly maintained facades of the houses, you will feel like you are walking through the history of the American pioneers.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art is definitely worth a visit with its beautiful neoclassical building and its extensive collection of items from over 2,000 years of art history. A lot of visitors also come to see another highlight: the steps in front of the museum became famous with the first "Rocky" film which was shot in 1976. Many fans climb the steps at a run and stand in front of the museum in Stallone's winning pose for a photo on New Year's Eve. At the same time, don’t miss out on enjoying the wonderful view over Philadelphia’s skyline. There is a statue of the legendary film character on the right in front of the museum. You can also visit the other original locations used in the film on specific city tours.

Where artists have left their mark

Philadelphia Kunst

In 1984, the city commissioned the "Mural Arts Program" as an anti-graffiti campaign to direct the creative potential of young, local artists in a constructive way. This clever move meant that the city could take advantage of its former unsavoury image: taggers were able to avoid fines and imprisonment by spraying "real art" on the walls instead of the usual tags, thus contributing to making the cityscape more beautiful. In the meantime, more than 4,000 murals have been created on sides of buildings and walls throughout the city as part of this programme. Philadelphia also calls itself the "mural capital of the world". Street art can be seen everywhere, but most of all in the alternative artists' quarter around South Street. If you are interested, you can also take a guided "mural tour" of the city.

Practical travel tips for your stay in the city and a list of things you should definitely go and see (including tips on the best photo spots) are given in these two travel reports:

Tracing the evolution of the food scene

Philadelphia Essen

Of course, you cannot visit Philadelphia without enjoying the legendary Philly Cheese Steak. This is a bread roll filled with beef, onions and cheese, which can easily replace two meals. But even aside from this speciality (which is perhaps not for everyone), Philadelphia is a haven for "foodies". The city has developed into a hot spot in the gastronomic scene in recent years, offering everything and anything ranging from top cuisine to delicious street food. We highly recommend a visit to the Reading Terminal Market, the oldest farmers' market in the USA. You will find almost everything your hungry heart desires at its many stands.

Exciting facts about Philadelphia:

  • Pennsylvania, the state where Philadelphia is located, does not levy taxes on shoes and clothing. This makes Philadelphia the perfect place to go shopping.
  • In addition to "Philly," the city is also called the "City of Brotherly Love". City founder William Penn had planned the town to be the capital of the Quaker colony of Pennsylvania in 1681. Translated from Greek, Philadelphia means "brotherly love".
  • Long ago, the first German settlement in America was in Philadelphia, in the district Germantown, which still has the same name today. Today, however, African Americans make up the largest part of the population in this quarter.
  • As the birthplace of the United States, Philadelphia is home to the country's largest Independence Day celebrations. The festivities begin on 29 June with an extensive programme of events and reach their climax with a large parade and fireworks on 4 July.
  • Philadelphia is considered one of the most tolerant cities in the United States. In 1965, four years before the famous Stonewall Uprising in New York, which set the worldwide gay and lesbian movement in motion, Pride marches already took place here.
  • Philadelphia cheese was first produced in 1880. The production site was located in Chester (New York State), but it was named after Philadelphia because the city was famous for its cheese tradition.
