Chișinău – The Undiscovered Capital

If you want to avoid heaps of tourists on holiday then you should look no further than Eastern Europe and visit the city of Chișinău. The charm of the Republic of Moldova’s capital is captivating. There are some real gems to be found among the historical buildings from Soviet times which are worth seeing. The Nativity Cathedral is an important building of the Moldovan Orthodox Church. The triumphal arch can also be found close by. If you’re looking for peace and quiet, then you can go for a walk and stay a while in one of the large and clean parks. Watching the old people play chess in the park, you’ll feel transported to a different time…

What’s also remarkable about the city is the amount of museums. It’s worth visiting the City Museum, which is lodged inside a distinctive water tower, as well as the National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History. In addition to this, Chișinău is the perfect starting point for discovering the superb mountains, monasteries and unparalleled natural reserves found in the untouched land at the edge of Europe. Lovers of wine should absolutely take a trip to the hinterlands, since viticulture has a long tradition in Moldova. Just a few kilometres away from Chișinău, you’ll find Milestii Mici and Cricova, the largest wine cellars in the country. The wine collection kept in the limestone tunnels of Cricova is especially worth a visit. On a visit to the underground Merlot, Chardonnay, and Cabernet-Sauvignon roads, where wine matures under the best conditions in casks and tanks, you can have a look around and then savour in a wine tasting session afterwards.
