First major concrete work on the BBI: Construction of taxiway connections to the southern runway of Schoenefeld Airport begins in March 2007
Construction of the BBI taxiway connections to the existing Schoenefeld Airport begins in March of this year. The contract award dispute pending with the Higher Administrative Court of Brandenburg has been amicably settled. The contract for the construction project has been awarded to the top bidder. The construction work will be executed by a consortium comprising the companies STRABAG AG, Johann Bunte Bauunternehmung GmbH & Co KG, Lemme Tiefbau, Trapp Infra Berlin GmbH, Gildemeister Tief- Stahlbeton- und Rohrleitungsbau GmbH & Co. KG and beton & rohrbau C.-F. Thymian GmbH & Co KG. The companies will be provided with the bituminous concrete necessary for the construction work by the central concrete and asphalt supply unit. The construction work is due to be completed before the end of the year. The contract volume totals 20 million euros.

“We are delighted that the parties have come to a consensus,” said FBS managing director Thomas Weyer. “We can now proceed with the first major concrete work on the capital’s new airport, BBI.” The present south runway of Schoenefeld Airport will become the north runway at BBI during the course of the airport expansion, when four new rapid exit taxiways and four new access taxiways will be connected to the runway.

As the taxiway connection work will be performed immediately adjacent to the runway, it will be necessary to close the runway to air traffic for the duration of the construction work. The Berlin Airports request the residents of neighbouring Bohnsdorf and Grünau to bear with the noise pollution arising during the final deployment of the north runway. The Berlin Airports will inform the residents individually about the specific sequence and extent of the construction work to be undertaken.
