Berlin watchmaker opens Askania & Friends Lounge at Tegel Airport / The Board of Askania and Management of BER underline successful cooperation
At 11 a.m. this morning, Leonhard R. Müller, CEO of Askania Uhren AG, and Prof. Dr. Rainer Schwarz, CEO of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH, opened the Askania & Friends Lounge in Terminal A of Tegel Airport. Until the opening of the new airport in Schönefeld, Berlin's only watchmaker will have further opportunity to present its products to passengers and boost business in Tegel with its new lounge. Besides high-quality, exclusive timepieces manufactured by Askania, cooperative partners Infiniti, Axel Springer, Weinheuer and Porta will be represented in the 270 m2 Askania & Friends Lounge. The lounge will be open between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. daily to all passengers at Tegel Airport.

Summing up the past few months, Müller said: "Naturally, the delayed opening of the new Capital Airport has presented us and all other retailers planning to open shops or restaurants there with some major financial challenges. The opening of the lounge will enable us to finally focus on the future and make the most of Tegel remaining open for an extended period." In his welcoming speech, Müller underlined efforts made by the airport operator to find a temporary viable solution for Askania at Tegel. Prof. Dr. Rainer Schwarz, CEO of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH, then addressed all those present: "I am delighted that we are able to open the Askania & Friends Lounge today. We have promised to work with all BER tenants on finding individual solutions. Today you can see that we have followed through on our promise."

Time keeps ticking for the Capital Airport's capital watchmaker

Askania has been represented in the main hall of Tegel Airport for more than three years with a small store in the shopping arcade. Now that the lounge has opened, there will be two stores at the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport in Schönefeld, both outside and in the transit area. Here, Askania will continue to offer a range of capital timepieces, including the models Alexanderplatz, Avus and Tempelhof. A special model of the Quadriga watch is created every year to illustrate Askania's tradition as the capital watchmaker. Production of these special edition timepieces, which are reminiscent of Berlin's famous landmark, is traditionally limited to the number of years of Askania watchmaking history, which is now 141. The Quadriga has been presented to the public for more than eight years now at the annual "Zeit & Wein" event held in late summer and attended by friends, business partners and leading figures from the world of film and TV.

More than 140 years of Berlin tradition in attractive designs

Carl Bamberg, son of a watchmaker and protégée of Carl Zeiss, founded Askania in 1871 as a company for precision instruments. As the leading manufacturer of timepieces and instruments for the navy up until 1920, the company was considered a guarantor for technically innovative and reliable aviation instruments made in Germany right up until the 40s. In 2006, exactly 135 years after its foundation, the company started up again in Berlin-Friedenau with the production of mechanical watches. Thanks to traditional precision work and exclusivity, Askania Uhren AG was able to achieve the success of its founding years and celebrated its 140th anniversary in 2012. Askania timepieces are available from selected jewellers throughout Germany.
