Tegel is now experiencing growing passenger numbers again after the decline in 2017

24.10.18 11:45

The passenger numbers at Tegel are now increasing again after numbers fell by 3.7 per cent year-on-year in 2017 to just under 20.5 million. Around 17.492 million passengers had taken off and landed in Tegel by 21 October, i.e. including the high passenger traffic at the beginning of the autumn holidays. That is a good 26,000 passengers more than there were during the same period last year. There was particularly strong growth in late summer and autumn compared to the previous year. In the first three weeks of October alone, the number of passengers in Tegel rose from 1.24 million to 1.57 million. Given the fact that the passenger numbers in Schönefeld were almost identical to those in 2017, the growth in Tegel means that the airport company’s passenger numbers have increased overall.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, CEO of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH:
“By the end of last week at the latest, Tegel had completely recovered from the dip caused by the collapse of AirBerlin. If passenger figures continue to develop in the next two months, we will come very close to 22 million passengers by the end of the year. The figures show that the teams at the airport are working very well together despite the difficult conditions during the long summer and the continuing high passenger volume. I would like to thank everyone involved.

The overall increase in passengers presents us with a huge challenge, but it does not come as a surprise. At both airports, we are prepared so that we can continue to cope with the high volume of traffic and we are implementing measures to improve the way we do things and to offer passengers more services. In Tegel, for example, we will ensure that operations run as smoothly as possible until the BER opens. We will also be investing over 50 million euros in Schönefeld in the coming years to improve operations and the quality of the time our passengers spend at the airport.”
