Further growth at Berlin’s Airports: New passenger record at Tegel this October

06.11.18 14:50

With a good 29,117,500 passengers up to and including October 2018, Berlin’s airports have already transported over 200,000 more passengers this year than in the same period last year. This is an increase of 0.7 percent. On 19 October alone, the busiest day of the year to date, 133,612 passengers took off from and landed at Berlin’s airports. After only a small increase in passenger numbers at Berlin’s airports of 1.3 percent in 2017 compared to 2016, the airport company expects more growth at the airport location in 2018.

Tegel Airport has recovered well following the decline in passenger numbers in 2017 and transported almost 2.3 million passengers in October alone. That is over 550,000 passengers more than in the same month last year and represents an increase of almost 32 per cent. From January to the end of October 2018, a total of more than 18 million passengers flew from Tegel. That is 1.4 percent more than in the same period last year. Passenger figures at Schönefeld in October were slightly down on the same month last year and now stand at a good 1.2 million. In the first ten months of 2018 (January to October), passenger figures at Schönefeld were almost the same level as during the same period last year at 10.9 million.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, CEO of the Management Board of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH:
“We are confident that Tegel will grow this year and that Air Berlin’s insolvency is behind us. Passenger figures at Schönefeld are still at last year’s level. We therefore expect the total number of passengers to reach almost 35 million in 2018. The increasing number of passengers will not take the two airports by surprise. At both Tegel and Schönefeld, we are continuing to invest strategically in upgrading our infrastructure for growth and expanding where necessary. We are also continuing to work on improving the service and processes at the airports for passengers. Thanks to our experienced employees, we will be able to manage growth effectively.”

The figures used are rounded. The final traffic report will be sent out towards the end of the month. The traffic statistics can be found online at: link
