100 years of civil aviation Airport company is committed to the innovative spirit of aviation pioneers

04.02.19 10:40

Civil aviation will celebrate its centenary on 6 February 2019. After the Deutsche Luft-Reederei (DLR), the world's first airline for civil aviation, was certified in Berlin in January 1919, regular postal services and passenger traffic between Berlin and Weimar began on 6 February 1919.

Today, civil aviation is one of the most powerful job generators in Berlin and Brandenburg. There are over 21,000 employees at Tegel and Schönefeld airports. The airport company will submit the construction completion notification for Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) during aviation’s anniversary year. A new chapter in civil aviation history will begin at the capital's BER Airport starting in October 2020. Over the next two decades, more than 60,000 people will be working around BER Airport.

The new capital airport is also vitally important for international trade and especially important for transporting goods outside Europe. Aviation connects German companies with important supply and sales markets all over the world. Berlin’s airports registered 40,205 tons of air freight and transported 4,456 tons of air mail in 2018.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, CEO of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH:
"We are proud that the Berlin-Brandenburg region is the birthplace of civil aviation and that even 100 years later it is one of the most dynamic airport locations in Germany. The airport company is committed to the innovative spirit of aviation pioneers and offers passengers a good service even under difficult conditions. The figures speak for themselves: no other destination has more direct traffic than Berlin. The new capital airport BER has the chance to develop into a digital hub and to be a pioneer, just like it was 100 years ago. We are working on ensuring that every passenger at BER can choose their personal connecting flights independently of home carriers and airline alliances and that we take care of the processes involved as well as baggage handling".
