When are moor frogs blue? Which hiking trails are used by brown hares? And who lives off edible wild herbs? You can find answers to these questions and more on the information boards in the Zülow Lowlands, situated in the counties Teltow-Fläming and Dahme-Spreewald, and provided by the Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH (FBB) together with the Mittelbrandenburg Countryside Conservation Society (LPV). At 39 locations, visitors can now find specific information about the ecological schemes being implemented in the region.

Ecological Schemes

Nature conservation is an important concern for the FBB: located in the direct vicinity of the BER numerous projects are arranged that seek to compensate for the necessary interference with nature caused by the construction of the new airport. The largest individual project is the Zülow Lowlands, about nine kilometres south of the BER. The countryside between the villages of Mittenwalde, Dabendord, Groß Machnow and Rangsdorf is being developed as a place for nature and relaxation. With the cooperation of farmers, nature conservation schemes are in place in the area of around 1,500 hectars: new trees are planted; mixed woodlands are being developed; ponds are made; and refuges are being built for protected species like hares, bats, and moor frogs. These schemes are financed by the airport company and coordinated by the LPV.

Dr Manfred Bobke-von Camen, Chief Human Resources Officer at Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: “As an airport company, it’s of great importance to us that we ecologically balance out the effects on the environment and nature surrounding the airport. In the last few years, we have already been able to implement numerous schemes for this compensation in the Züwlow Lowlands. For example, planting stretches of flowers along the edges of fields. Thanks to the new information boards and signs, visitors can now not only explore the Zülow Lowlands independently, but also get a sense of the newly implemented schemes”.
