Airport company presents wild horses to the municipality of Schönefeld

28.10.19 15:05

Today, airport boss Engelbert Lütke Daldrup presented ten Liebenthaler wild horses to the mayor of Schönefeld, Dr Udo Haase. Since 2015, the herd of wild horses has been located on a pasture in the park “In den Gehren”, and is now being passed into the possession of the municipality of Schönefeld.

Since 2013, Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH (FBB) has been providing extensive compensation for the impact caused by the construction of BER Airport on nature and the landscape on an area of around 2,000 hectares. One of the numerous measures was the settlement of ten Liebenthaler wild horses in the park “In den Gehren” in 2015.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, CEO of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: “For the airport company, the compensation measures in the surrounding area are far more than an obligation arising from the planning approval. Together with the municipality of Schönefeld, new habitats for animals and plants have been created in this park, and in many other places around the airport. The airport company is therefore making an important contribution to the further ecological development of the region.”

Dr Udo Haase, mayor of the municipality of Schönefeld: “Even if today’s handover of the herd does not change anything for the horses themselves, the step is a good sign. It shows that the partnership with the airport company is not just about designating ecological compensation areas; it’s also a matter of creating added value for the citizens.”

“In den Gehren” covers an area of more than 28 hectares. In addition to pastures for wild horses and recreational areas, valuable habitats for animal and plant species have been created through wooded areas, solitary trees, and semi-open biotopes. “In den Gehren” will be integrated into the municipality of Schönefeld’s footpath and cycle path networks. In addition to the pastures, “In den Gehren” includes meadows, islands of trees, and hollows. A total of 1,270 trees such as field maples, hornbeams, English oaks, silver limes, and elms were planted, mostly as saplings or multi-stem trees.
