Topping-out ceremony for the Federal Police building / Into operation before BER opening

16.01.20 12:02

The shell of the new Federal Police building at Berlin Brandenburg Airport has been completed on time and was celebrated with a topping-out ceremony yesterday. The building is being constructed by the general contractor Goldbeck Nordost GmbH on behalf of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH for the Federal Police in close proximity to the new terminal T2 at BER. Completion is scheduled for early summer. In order to ensure a smooth transition from the existing airports to BER, the building will be taken over and put into operation as early as summer, in time for the BER opening on 31 October 2020.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, Chief Executive Officer of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: “Safe and reliable flight operations always require the interaction of many partners and processes. The Federal Police and their security service providers play a particularly important role in our service quality. With the new building for the Federal Police, we are creating very good conditions for this. The Federal Police building, like the neighbouring terminal T2, is being built by a general contractor. We have made faster progress there than planned and were able to complete the shell at the end of last year.”

Karl-Heinz Weidner, President of the Federal Police Headquarters Berlin: “The building marks the completion of an important project for the airport and the Federal Police. It is already the second Federal Police building at BER, in addition to the building for security services, which was completed in 2011. Equipped with the latest technology, the building offers optimal conditions for the successful performance of tasks by the Federal Police in the areas of border police, aviation security and railway police at Berlin Brandenburg Airport due to its close proximity to terminals 1 and 2.”

The building is located in the public area of Campus BER and offers direct access to terminals T1 and T2. It is easy to reach thanks to connections to the multi-storey car park, railway station and bus stop. The building’s net floor area is 2600 square meters over three floors. In total, the building will be used by around 400 Federal Police employees working in a multi-shift operation. On the ground floor, there will be a reception area with a guard’s office and processing rooms for searches and interrogations. In addition, 40 office workspaces as well as changing rooms, social areas and training rooms will be set up. The investment costs amount to around EUR 8 million.
