Air travellers who are returning to Berlin from high risk Corona areas should be able to be tested for COVID-19 as soon as they arrive at the terminals at both Tegel Airport (TXL) and Schönefeld Airport (SXF). Experts from Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin are preparing a plan for this and its implementation in collaboration with the airport operating company, Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH, on behalf of the Senate Chancellery for Higher Education and Research. In the past week, both parties have inspected possible sites at both airports. Further confirmation of details is currently ongoing. The aim is to start testing at both airports this week

The Governing Mayor of Berlin and Senator for Higher Education and Research, Michael Müller: “We have been in discussion with Charité and the operator of the airports in Tegel and Schönefeld about setting up test sites for people returning from high risk Corona areas since the week before last and we will therefore be able to quickly implement Friday’s agreement between the federal and state health departments in Berlin. Many thanks to all those involved who are working hard on this so that we are ready to go this week”.

“The planned tests at both airports are another component of Berlin’s testing strategy,” says Prof. Dr. Ulrich Frei, Chief Medical Officer at Charité. “The agreements between all those involved are very constructive. The requirements for carrying out the tests will be achieved in cooperation with Vivantes,” he adds.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, Chief Executive Officer of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: „Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH welcomes the decision taken by the Senate. The possibility to be tested at the airport upon arrival increases the safety of passengers, which is our highest priority. This in turn has a positive effect on the revitalisation of air traffic und strengthening the economy after the Corona crisis”.
