FBB’s discussion day on noise protection / More than 150 guests obtained information at the last discussion day on noise protection before BER opening

More than 150 guests used the opportunity to obtain information about the BER Noise Protection Programme on 13 August at the last discussion day on noise protection before BER is put into operation. For the fifth year in a row, various construction companies and the FBB’s Noise Protection Team were available for individual questions and discussions throughout the day at the DIALOG-FORUM. Many of the guests asked for advice on installing sound protection in their homes. Numerous issues were discussed and open questions were clarified in individual and constructive discussions.

Michael Halberstadt, Chief Human Resources Officer at Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: “We were once again available as a contact for all guests shortly before commissioning. Having sound protection installed in homes is not easy and often very expensive. However, there is not much time left before BER begins operations and it is high time that local residents address the issue and have noise protection installed”.

The specialist presentations were also well attended; Ralf Wagner, Head of Noise Protection, provided information implementing noise protection measures and house construction at the airport. Ralf Wagner attached particular importance to the fact that building owners who want to build new buildings in the noise protection area should contact FBB at an early stage and before planning begins. “We will then have the opportunity to advise them of the expected aircraft noise levels so that buildings can be planned at an early stage in a way that complies with noise protection. Moreover, we are offering individual agreements in which we pledge to assume the additional costs for noise protection,” says Ralf Wagner. Contacting FBB after the completion of the new building is not recommended. “Then we might have to inform the building owners that the sound protection is insufficient and that the houses that have just been completed will have to be modified.”

More than 95 percent of applications have been processed but many are hesitant to install noise protection

More than 22,000 applications for noise protection measures have now been received by FBB. Of these, over 21,000, more than 95 percent, have been processed. The remaining applications are still being processed or cannot currently be processed since residents cannot be reached or have asked that their application be processed at a later date.

Documents on the implementation of structural noise protection have been sent to around 13,000 households and noise protection measures have been installed in just under 3,700 households so far. More than 9,000 households remain and are still hesitating with implementing noise protection, even though the necessary documents have largely been available for years. Therefore, it can be assumed that thousands of properties will not have sound protection even when BER is commissioned.

In addition to the noise protection measures confirmed in around 13,000 cases, more than 7,000 households have received a pledge of compensation payment from FBB. This will be paid if the costs of the sound protection measures amount to more than 30 percent of the property’s market value. Residents are free to decide on how the compensation is used. More than 6,700 cases of compensation amounting to over 270 million euros have already been paid out. FBB encourages using the money for sound protection measures and offers free advice on this.
