The end of summer tourism means sinking passenger numbers / The effects of increasing COVID-19 infection rate can be felt

08.10.20 13:05

After the number of passengers rose steadily in the summer months, the airports in Tegel and Schönefeld once again recorded fewer guests in September. A total of 693,601 passengers flew in September from both airports. This shows a 16.3 percent decrease in comparison to the previous month. The main reasons for this were the end of the summer holidays, the increasing travel warnings from neighbouring EU countries and the changing quarantine regulations upon entry. In total, Schönefeld processed 213,412 passengers, whilst Tegel handled 480,189. Compared to the same month last year, this proved to be a decrease of 78.7 percent.

9,522 flights were registered for both airports, in which Schönefeld carried out 3,747 and Tegel 5,775. This shows a decline of 63 percent when compared to last year.

From January to September, a total of 8,038,590 passengers were transported: 2,600,446 through Schönefeld and 5,483,144 through Tegel. This is 70.5 percent less than in the same timeframe last year.

Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, Chief Executive Officer of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: “The decrease in the number of passengers in September shows how the infection rate and compulsory quarantine have a direct impact on passenger numbers. In order to connect the capital region reliably to the rest of the world, even during the pandemic, we need less blanket quarantine regulations and more opportunities to get tested at the airport. Furthermore, the actual infection hotspots ought to be sectioned off more clearly, so that other areas can continue to be reached.”
