Frequently Asked Questions

  • Am I allowed to carry a cigarette lighter?
International regulations concerning hazardous materials permit each passenger to carry only one gas lighter. They must carry their lighter on their person. Transport in hand or checked luggage is prohibited. Carrying fuel lighters is generally prohibited unless the fuel and wick have been removed. Please note that your baggage may otherwise be opened for the required subsequent inspection.
  • How many pieces of baggage can I take with me free of charge?
Every airline sets its own rules for the number of pieces of baggage which can be taken free of charge. Ask your airline about its specific regulations.
  • What is oversize and special baggage, and where do I drop it off?
These items are classified as oversize and special baggage:
    • Objects and baggage larger than 100 cm x 75 cm x 45 cm
    • Objects and baggage weighing more than 32 kg
    • Bicycles
    • Golf bags
    • Wheelchairs
    • Skis
    • Sun umbrellas
    • Sporting firearms
    • Surfboards
    • Diving equipment/diving backpacks
    • Animals in transport crates which have been registered for transport

Ask your airline about its specific provisions, registration requirements and charges for the transport of oversize and special baggage before you start your trip.

  • Where can I report damage to baggage or lost baggage?
Your contacts in the event of damaged or lost baggage are the staff of your airline and its handling company.
  • Where can I store objects or have them sealed?
You will find the left luggage facility at Tegel Airport in the service centre in Terminal A (ground floor).
  • What must I keep in mind about the transport of valuables?
We recommend that you always keep your valuables on your person or in your hand luggage and that you conclude a supplementary insurance policy to cover them. Airlines have only limited liability for checked baggage which is regulated by the terms and conditions of liability in the Montreal Convention.
  • What is the maximum size for my hand luggage?
Most airlines permit dimensions of up to 55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm. However, the regulations about maximum dimensions and weight of hand luggage vary from one airline to the next. Ask the airline you will be travelling on about its specific regulations before starting your trip. Many airlines provide special devices at the airport to check the size of your hand luggage.
